China asked the United States to help keep peace in the South China Sea during a recent phone call between important diplomats of both countries.
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu talked with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell over the phone when the U.S. asked on Wednesday.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin Jian, told reporters about the call on Friday. Lin said both sides talked about how China and the U.S. are getting along and about worldwide and local issues they both care about.
During the conversation, Ma explained China’s thoughts on Taiwan, Hong Kong, the South China Sea, and trade, science, and technology matters, Lin said.
Ma asked the U.S. to stick to the “one-China” idea and the three agreements between China and the U.S. and to respect China’s most important interests.
He also wanted the U.S. to stop turning economic and trade issues into political and safety issues and to stop blaming Hong Kong without thinking, the spokesperson said.
Ma also talked about China’s strong opinion on the situations in Korea and Ukraine during the call.
