In a press briefing at the White House on Monday, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan addressed the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, asserting that the Biden administration does not consider the violence to constitute genocide.
Sullivan emphasized the administration’s stance on the matter, stating, “We do not believe what is happening in Gaza is a genocide. We have been firmly on record rejecting that proposition.” His remarks come amid growing international concern over the escalating violence and civilian casualties in the region.
President Joe Biden’s support of Israel has faced criticism from some quarters, including within his own support base, with accusations leveled against Israel of committing genocide. However, Sullivan reiterated the administration’s commitment to seeing Hamas defeated, while acknowledging the dire situation facing Palestinians in Gaza.
Describing the conditions in Gaza, Sullivan stated that Palestinians there were experiencing “hell,” and cautioned against a major military operation by Israel in Rafah, emphasizing that it would be a mistake.
Sullivan echoed Biden’s recent comments, indicating that a ceasefire in Gaza could be achieved if Hamas were to release prisoners. He urged Hamas to return to the negotiating table and accept a deal, emphasizing the urgent need for a ceasefire and prisoner release agreement.
The Biden administration is reportedly working diligently towards achieving a ceasefire and prisoner release deal, although Sullivan refrained from speculating on the timeline or likelihood of such an agreement being reached.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in a significant loss of life and widespread destruction, prompting calls from the international community for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to dialogue to address the underlying issues fueling the violence.
