In a bid to combat the recurring fires plaguing Islamabad’s Margalla Hills, authorities have apprehended three individuals allegedly involved in the recent spate of blazes. This development comes as part of an intensified effort by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to hold perpetrators accountable and safeguard the cherished natural landscape.

Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa, also serving as the CDA chairman, affirmed the arrests, emphasizing the commitment to protecting the scenic hills at all costs. The suspects were caught by the CDA’s environment wing and subsequently handed over to Islamabad police for further investigation.

With the fires persisting, the CDA has escalated its response, deploying over 80 firefighters to combat the latest blaze. Despite challenges posed by high-speed winds and hot weather conditions, efforts to contain the inferno have been underway, with a helicopter aiding in the operation.

Monitoring the situation closely, Environment Director Asif Majeed, under the directives of Chairman Randhawa, is overseeing the firefighting operation. In addition, patrolling has been intensified in Margalla Hills as part of preventive measures.

The recent string of fires, with 15 cases reported in a single day, has raised suspicions of human involvement, prompting Interior Minister’s orders for an inquiry and the formation of a committee to probe the incidents. Randhawa, in collaboration with law enforcement authorities, has pledged to identify and prosecute any individuals responsible for igniting the fires.

Margalla Hills, spanning over 12,605 hectares, have faced recurring fire incidents, with Tuesday alone witnessing 15 such cases. Amidst the firefighting efforts, concerns have been raised regarding potential motives behind the deliberate blazes, including possible attempts to instigate discord between the CDA and the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board, both tasked with overseeing the conservation of the hills.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the escalating situation, particularly following the recent fire outbreaks in the Saidpur and Noorpur ranges of the Margalla Hills. With the collaborative efforts of authorities and ongoing investigations, there remains a collective resolve to ensure the preservation of this natural heritage for future generations.
