Two people were found dead inside a red pickup truck that sank after a bridge collapsed in Baltimore.
The bridge collapsed after a ship hit it, causing eight construction workers to fall into the water. Two workers were rescued, but four others are still missing and presumed dead.
The two recovered victims were identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, from Mexico and Guatemala respectively. Divers couldn’t continue their search due to dangerous debris in the water, so they’re using sonar to locate other vehicles with potential victims inside.
Two more missing workers have been named: Miguel Luna from El Salvador and Maynor Suazo Sandoval from Honduras. One person who was in the hospital after the incident has been released.
Efforts to find the missing workers are underway, but it’s challenging due to the conditions in the water. The ship involved has a large amount of fuel and cargo, which adds to the complexity of the situation.
The US Navy plans to use heavy lift cranes to remove parts of the bridge from the water. Investigations into the cause of the ship’s power loss are ongoing, and officials hope data from the ship’s recorder will provide answers.
The collapse has disrupted the port and could impact global supply chains and the economy. Authorities are working to replace the bridge as quickly as possible, but it will take time. They’re also looking into whether contaminated fuel contributed to the crash.
