US President Joe Biden delivered a blend of self-deprecation and pointed humor aimed at his political rival, Donald Trump, during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday. Meanwhile, outside the Washington Hilton hotel, protesters voiced their opposition to Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

The event saw a gathering of VIP guests, including journalists and celebrities like Chris Pine and Molly Ringwald, dressed in black-tie attire. However, more than 100 protesters confronted attendees outside the venue, chanting slogans such as “shame on you.”

Inside, President Biden and comedian Colin Jost of “Saturday Night Live” took center stage. Jost humorously teased Biden about his age and occasional mishaps, while also taking aim at Trump’s recent courtroom appearances. Biden, in turn, made light-hearted remarks about his age and quipped about his vice president’s endorsement.

Despite the comedic tone, both Jost and Biden addressed the serious political climate, with Biden emphasizing the dangers of Trump’s rhetoric, particularly in the wake of the Capitol attack. Jost paid tribute to Biden’s decency, citing his late grandfather’s vote for the president.

While the gala dinner featured laughs and lighthearted moments, the scene outside remained somber, with protesters displaying a large Palestinian flag from a hotel window. Demonstrators voiced their discontent over US support for Israel’s military actions in Gaza, with some urging journalists to boycott the event in solidarity with Palestinian journalists facing violence.

The Washington Metropolitan Police Department assured that it would facilitate peaceful demonstrations while ensuring access for dinner guests. The annual event, organized by the White House Correspondents’ Association since 1920, celebrates top reporters and awards journalism scholarships. Last year’s dinner saw 2,600 attendees.
