Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun delivered a stern message on Sunday, affirming the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) readiness to take decisive measures to prevent “Taiwan independence” and ensure it never materializes. Dong made these remarks during a speech on China’s Approach to Global Security at the 21st International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.
In his address, Dong emphasized China’s commitment to peace and harmony, stating that peaceful development is enshrined in the country’s Constitution. He asserted that China does not seek hegemony or military expansion, rebuffing any allegations to the contrary.
Addressing regional tensions, Dong expressed confidence in the Asia-Pacific countries’ ability to resolve conflicts internally, condemning coercion from external hegemonic powers.
Regarding the Taiwan issue, Dong underscored its significance as a core interest of China, emphasizing the one-China principle as a fundamental norm in international relations. While China remains dedicated to peaceful reunification, Dong criticized “Taiwan independence” elements and external forces for undermining this goal.
Dong specifically targeted the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities for promoting “incremental independence” and “de-sinicization,” actions aimed at severing social, historical, and cultural ties across the Taiwan Straits.
Furthermore, Dong accused external forces of attempting to erode the one-China principle by selling arms to Taiwan and engaging in unauthorized official exchanges. He labeled these actions as promoting “Taiwan independence” and condemned them as a means to exert pressure on China, ultimately endangering Taiwan.
The Chinese Defense Minister’s remarks at the Shangri-La Dialogue underscore China’s unwavering stance on the Taiwan issue and its determination to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The speech serves as a warning to both domestic and international actors against any moves perceived as advocating for “Taiwan independence” and threatening China’s core interests.
