Former PCB chief Zaka Ashraf criticized the decision to remove Shaheen Shah Afridi as captain and reinstate Babar Azam, terming it hasty. He believed Shaheen should have been given more time to prove himself, at least a year, before any decision was made. During his tenure, Babar had stepped down as captain in all formats, leading to Shaheen’s appointment as T20 skipper after poor performances in the Asia Cup and World Cup. However, Pakistan’s series loss in New Zealand under Shaheen’s captaincy led to criticism.

Zaka explained that Babar was relieved of captaincy to alleviate pressure on his batting. While initially wanting to retain Babar as Test captain, he respected Babar’s decision to step down from all formats. He expressed support for Babar’s return as captain, wishing the best for the national team.

Zaka questioned the composition of the new national selection committee, led by Mohsin Raza Naqvi, which predominantly consists of former cricketers from Lahore, with only one member from Karachi. He stressed the importance of provincial representation in the committee and expressed surprise at its lack of leadership.

Regarding an inquiry he initiated against Saya Corporation, a player agent company with numerous Pakistani cricketers, including Babar, Zaka urged the PCB to make the report public. He emphasized the need for transparency, especially concerning player affiliations with specific agencies. He clarified that Wahab Riaz, a member of the current selection committee, had no role in advising him on changing Babar’s captaincy, as it was solely the chairman’s decision.
