In a recent development at the Islamabad High Court (IHC), the judiciary has granted the government a four-day extension to facilitate the recovery of the missing poet Ahmed Farhad. This decision came after a request from Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan, who sought additional time to leverage available resources for Farhad’s retrieval.

During the proceedings, Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani accepted the adjournment request, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. The federal minister for law and justice had previously held a press conference following certain remarks made by the judge against the executive, further directing the investigating officer to record statements from intelligence officials.

Despite efforts made by the investigating officer, it was reported that Farhad was not in the custody of the intelligence agency. However, the judge underscored the importance of adhering strictly to the Police Rules and urged the authorities to act in accordance with the law.

AGP Awan assured the court of the government’s commitment to utilizing all available resources for Farhad’s recovery within the specified timeframe. Notably, the judge reminded Awan of the government’s previous undertaking to prevent any individual from going missing in Islamabad.

Meanwhile, in a separate hearing regarding Baloch missing persons, Justice Kayani emphasized the importance of all stakeholders acting within the confines of the law. He called for transparency regarding the working procedures of intelligence agencies and stressed that all institutions must operate lawfully.

AGP Awan acknowledged the political nature of the issue, highlighting the necessity for a political resolution. Justice Kayani commended Awan for his efforts, noting that several missing persons had been recovered due to his diligent work.

The proceedings underscored the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the protection of citizens’ rights. Further hearings on Farhad’s case have been adjourned until Friday, May 24, as the search for the missing poet continues.
