Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir will be absent from Derbyshire’s early-season matches as he prepares to make a comeback to international cricket.

Amir, 31, had initially committed to play for Derbyshire in the first half of the Championship season and all T20 Blast group stage fixtures. However, his availability has been limited to six group matches following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup.

Amir is expected to be included in Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming five-match T20 series against New Zealand, which commences on 18 April.

The left-arm paceman last represented Pakistan in 2020 before retiring, citing mental stress caused by the team management. However, in a recent statement on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Amir expressed his desire to don the Pakistan jersey again, emphasizing his commitment to serve his country.

Amir’s decision to return to international cricket coincides with all-rounder Imad Wasim also reversing his retirement ahead of the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies.

Derbyshire will now search for an overseas replacement for Amir, with their Championship campaign scheduled to begin on 5 April.

Despite the disappointment of Amir’s absence, Derbyshire’s head of cricket Mickey Arthur acknowledged and respected his decision, noting recent discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board regarding Amir’s aspirations to resume his international career.
