In a dazzling display of intent, Pakistan outclassed Ireland in the second Twenty20 International on Sunday, marking a strong comeback after a surprising loss in the series opener. With the series now leveled, Pakistan aims to clinch victory in the decisive third match, scheduled for Tuesday, to bolster their momentum heading into the T20 World Cup.

Despite a lackluster performance with the ball, Pakistan showcased their batting prowess by successfully chasing down a daunting target of 194 runs in under 17 overs. Leading the charge were Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman, who delivered scintillating half-centuries after an early setback with the loss of openers Babar Azam and Saim in the powerplay.

This aggressive batting approach, even in the face of early setbacks, demonstrated Pakistan’s determination to address longstanding concerns about their strike rate, particularly crucial as top teams now consider 200 runs as a par score in T20Is.

Fakhar Zaman, who hammered 78 runs off just 40 balls with an array of boundaries and sixes, acknowledged the team’s need for a wake-up call after their defeat in the first match. He emphasized the importance of carrying forward the momentum gained from their emphatic victory into the upcoming World Cup campaign.

Despite initial plans to provide playing time to squad players, the pressure of the series decider is likely to see Pakistan field their strongest lineup. Azam Khan’s explosive cameo of 30 runs off 10 balls in the second match highlighted his potential as a finisher, offering hope for Pakistan’s middle-order stability.

Rizwan’s selfless contribution, relinquishing his gloves for Azam Khan, allowed the latter to shine with an unbeaten 75 off 46 deliveries, steering Pakistan towards victory.

However, Pakistan’s bowling department faces scrutiny after conceding heavily in the previous match. While pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi and experienced campaigner Mohammad Amir showcased their wicket-taking abilities, they were expensive in terms of runs conceded.

Captain Babar Azam’s tactical decisions, particularly regarding the utilization of spinners Saim Ayub and Imad Wasim, have raised questions about his strategic acumen once again, despite momentarily putting Ireland on the back foot with their introduction.

Looking ahead, Pakistan’s focus will shift to the upcoming series against England, comprising four T20Is, following the conclusion of the Ireland series. As they aim to fine-tune their preparations for the T20 World Cup, Pakistan will be eager to maintain their winning momentum and address areas of concern before facing formidable opposition in England.
