Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif underscored Pakistan’s untapped revenue potential, stating that the country could potentially collect over Rs24 trillion annually, far surpassing the current annual tax target of Rs9.4 trillion. Addressing the issue of substantial revenue losses due to corruption, inefficiency, and negligence, he emphasized the need to harness these resources for essential public services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

He highlighted the critical role of government officials in national development and urged strict adherence to discipline and accountability standards.

Acknowledging Pakistan’s economic challenges, including a low tax-to-GDP ratio and mounting debts, Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the need for decisive action. He outlined measures to recover outstanding amounts held up in legal proceedings, including the appointment of Appellant Tribunal Inland Revenue (ATIR) members through open competition and collaboration with reputable institutions for their selection.

Addressing recent revelations of a Rs756 billion sales tax scam, the Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to recovering embezzled funds and holding perpetrators accountable. He commended the efforts of honest FBR officers and emphasized their vital role in advancing the country’s development agenda.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb echoed the Prime Minister’s sentiments, emphasizing the pivotal role of revenue collection in driving socioeconomic progress. He underscored the importance of implementing policies to broaden the tax base and urged efficient and transparent execution to accelerate economic growth.

Highlighting the discrepancy between the number of commercial and industrial electricity and gas connections and sales tax contributions, Minister Aurangzeb emphasized the need to strengthen tax collection mechanisms and promote a culture of compliance.
