In the midst of escalating tensions between the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the government, the PTI has reiterated its demand for the immediate release of the Hamoodur Rahman Commission (HRC) Report. This move comes despite fierce criticism from government circles and an ongoing investigation by the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Cyber Wing into a controversial social media post attributed to PTI founder Imran Khan.
The controversy ignited when a post on a social media platform allegedly from Imran Khan’s account urged Pakistanis to study the HRC Report to ascertain the true culprit behind the country’s breakup in 1971. The post implicated former military dictator General Yahya Khan for the atrocities committed during the civil war, sparking intense backlash and prompting the FIA investigation.
Initially, the PTI attempted to distance itself from the contentious post, clarifying that it was intended in a “political context” rather than as an attack on the military. However, facing persistent criticism, the party has now doubled down on its stance, asserting the importance of releasing the HRC Report to educate the public about the historical events leading to the disintegration of East Pakistan.
In a statement following a PTI Core Committee meeting, the party emphasized the need to learn from history to avert similar internal challenges and called the FIA investigation unjustified. The statement highlighted the political nature of the events leading to the tragedy of 1971 and urged current decision-makers to heed the lessons of the past.
Furthermore, the PTI clarified its stance on the military, affirming its respect for the institution and emphasizing its criticism of individuals rather than the armed forces as a whole. The party also announced plans for nationwide peaceful protests in response to the controversy.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif criticized Imran Khan’s involvement in the matter, advising him to “shut up” to reduce tensions. Asif accused the PTI of attempting to escalate tensions and create unrest reminiscent of past events.
The unfolding saga underscores the deep-seated political divisions within Pakistan and the contentious nature of historical narratives, particularly regarding events as significant as the breakup of East Pakistan. As the PTI persists in its demand for transparency, the government faces mounting pressure to address the concerns raised by the opposition party.
