Islamabad, April 15, 2024: In a press conference held today, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Central Information Secretary Raoof Hasan voiced vehement opposition to purported attempts by the current government to extend the tenure of Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Qazi Isa. Hasan accused the government of attempting to manipulate judicial promotions to allegedly favor Justice Isa and expressed PTI’s commitment to uphold the rule of law.
Hasan, flanked by former Gilgit-Baltistan Khalid Khursheed and senior lawyer Naeem Panjutha, asserted that such actions by the government are a threat to the independence of the judiciary and the constitutional framework of Pakistan. He emphasized that PTI would resist any deviation from established norms in judicial appointments.
The press conference also addressed concerns over the state of the judicial system, citing instances of alleged injustice, including the case involving Bushra Bibi, the wife of Prime Minister Imran Khan. Hasan criticized what he described as the paralysis of the judicial system, highlighting incidents where justice seemed elusive.
Furthermore, the foreign policy stance of the government came under scrutiny, particularly regarding the recent conflict between Iran and Israel. Hasan condemned what he called a “weak” response from the foreign office, stating that it failed to adequately represent Pakistan’s stance on global issues.
The tragic incident in Bahawalnagar, where police clashed with army personnel, was also discussed. PTI demanded a transparent investigation into the matter to hold the culprits accountable and prevent further escalation of tensions between state institutions.
The press conference concluded with a call for accountability and an end to what PTI termed as “lawlessness and barbarism” in the country. Hasan reiterated PTI’s commitment to restoring democracy and upholding the constitution through a popular movement.
In response to the allegations and concerns raised, the government has yet to issue an official statement. However, the controversy surrounding judicial appointments and the state of law enforcement institutions is likely to deepen political divisions in Pakistan.
As the situation unfolds, the public awaits further developments, hoping for clarity and accountability in the face of mounting challenges to Pakistan’s democratic institutions and the rule of law.
