Ukrainian officials reported a devastating overnight assault by Russia, involving a barrage of approximately 100 missiles and drones aimed at energy facilities across the country. The attack, which comes amidst ongoing conflict, underscores escalating tensions and the vulnerability of critical infrastructure in Ukraine.
According to Ukraine’s Air Force, the onslaught included 53 missiles of various types and 47 attack drones. Despite efforts to repel the attack, Ukrainian forces managed to shoot down 35 missiles and all but one of the drones. However, the assault inflicted significant damage, particularly on two thermal power plants, as confirmed by the DTEK power operator.
The DTEK power operator described the attack as another blow to the already strained Ukrainian energy sector, noting serious damage to equipment at the targeted thermal power plants. This marks the sixth major attack on DTEK facilities since mid-March, exacerbating energy shortages and disruptions.
Ukraine’s Energy Minister, German Galushchenko, revealed that Russia targeted sites across five regions, spanning from Donetsk in the east to Ukraine’s western border with the EU. As a result of the attacks, the ministry warned of potential power restrictions on Saturday evening, further exacerbating the situation.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the assault, accusing Russia of exploiting vulnerabilities in Ukraine’s defenses and urging for increased support from Western allies. He emphasized the critical need for enhanced air defense systems to counter Russian aggression and safeguard Ukrainian sovereignty.
In response, Russia’s Defense Ministry justified the strikes as a necessary response to alleged attempts by Ukraine to damage Russian energy and transport facilities. The ministry characterized the assault as a “group strike” utilizing precision weapons against Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
The escalation of violence comes amidst ongoing tensions between the two nations, with Ukraine retaliating against Russian targets in recent months. Meanwhile, the aftermath of the attacks continues to unfold, with reports emerging of casualties from a separate missile strike in Kharkiv city.
The relentless cycle of violence underscores the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict and prevent further loss of life. As both sides engage in tit-for-tat attacks, the toll on civilian populations and critical infrastructure continues to mount, highlighting the pressing need for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
